There are so many recordings of jazz standards by so many different artists.. can anyone suggest some recordings that would be particularily well suited for playing along & working on fundamental walking lines?

Sounds like the Aebersold series is what you are looking for.

Band in the box is supposed to be good as well. You can also find a lot of free midi files on the web and import them into garage band

Look up Aebersold in this forum. You will see recommendations for which numbers are recommended for beginners. Hal Leonard also has Jazz play alongs that can be found at Amazon. Final recommendation is a couple of Ed Friedland's books. One is Building walking Bass lines and the other is Jazz Bass. Here is Ed Friedland's webpage
Ed is a nice guy. He sometimes answers questions around here.

In Montana they have signs over bars that say,"Before engaging your mouth, make sure your mind is in gear!"

To add to what everyone as suggested check out the Ken Burns DVD series on Jazz. Library should have it. Also there are CD's from Burn's Jazz series of representative tunes by a good assortment of legends. Also Concord Records has little box set of Concord Recordings of Ray Brown many standard in there.
