Hi guys a few of my students asked me to show them the ‘lick’ the great bass player Richard Bona plays in many of his solos. I figured there’d be lots more bass players out there that would be interested too so here it is… http://scottsbasslessons.com/video-tutorials/132-2/
I've got loads of other tutorials on my site... and loads more to come. Watch this space!

| | Registered User | | | | | The Glove... I've got a neurological condition called Focal Dystonia. It causes misfiring neurons in my brain that causes unwanted movements within both my hands while playing or doing anything involving small controlled movements with my hands. It's a pretty rare condition and is caused my hours and hours of practice over extended periods of time. I am told the largest group of suffers are classical musicians as their practice routines can be very vigorous and demanding. When my condition was at its worst i couldn't even play a major scale, that was about a year ago. By complete fluke a found that wearing gloves acted as a sensory trick and the movements seemed to diminish somewhat over a period of time. Now i'm back to gigging pretty much as normal as long as i'm careful although my days of practicing all day are completely out the window.
So, sorry if it is distracting but i need to wear it. I normally wear gloves on both hands but my right hand is feeling ok-ish at the moment.
Sorry to disappoint everyone who thought i was a die hard MJ fan! And, also the gloves are super thin and tight... so don't go trying it out with ya winter woolies on!
Take it easy,
Scott.

As far as the Bona lick goes, I'm going to work on it! That's killer.
Thanks for sharing that with everybody.

| | Registered User | | | | Hey guys thanks for the kind words! I've had loads of emails too about this 'Bona' tutorial. I'm super pleased everyones getting something from it. Because it's been so popular i've been thinking about doing some sort of style analysis video tutorials which i could add to my website. Basically discussing the improvisational techniques of people like Hadrien Feraud, Matt Garrison, Gary willis, Janek Gwizdala etc etc, and their different harmonic approaches. I'll give it some thought!
Thanks again,
Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com |

Thanks for sharing that with everybody. | I think it is mostly about the glove. I love the Bona lick tutorial though. I'll use that.
Was it me or did anyone else think the glove was some kind of personal muting technique?

Now I know there are effective treatments for it, among other things. The most promising appear to be retraining of neural paths, since the current thinking seems to be along the lines that the dystonia is the result of neural path training gone awry.
I'd always thought we had all that extra brain mass as part of a fault tolerant design. I was surprised to see that writer's cramp is a form of dystonia, and that horn players can get embouchure dystonia.
Thank you, devine, for hipping me to this.
