Rock songs in the key of D.......

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been doing vocals in my thrash band for twenty years and now at the ripe of age of 42, we're changing things up a bit to playing rock music. The first song we have written is in the key of D. I didn't think about it until last night, I don't know if I can sing in D without screaming in my thrash voice. So I'm looking for some examples of rock songs in the key of D just to get some style ideas.

These two pop into mind, and give two approaches to harmony in D Major:

Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
Can't You See - Marshall Tucker Band

"Mystic" is purely D Major with a Major 7th, While "Can't You See" has a more dominant feel since it goes to the C chord.

Do a google search for bands that play in drop d. 90% of the songs will be in the key of D. Off the top of my head I think a lot of tool stuff is in drop D, alot of audioslave stuff too.

Freddy King: I'm Tore Down is in D

Clapton does a cover in C

Play your intended songs in whatever key is comfortable for you, no?

any singer can sing in any key ....it all depends where you place the melody.....you have to change what you go for ....if your ear is telling you to always go to A, C and D above middle C then you will have trouble in D .....there's lot's of notes in any key available in a singable range!

Metal, trains our singer's ear to go for high 5ths and octaves in a given key ...herein lies the problem!

Off the top of my head:

Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine
Sober - Tool
Wasting my Time - Default
Everlong - Foo Fighters
Sound of Madness - Shinedown
Dead and Bloated - Stone Temple Pilots

Those are all drop D.

An easy one: Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
A hard one: Soundgarden - Spoonman

Both are played in drop D tuning, with the D as the tonic.
