I have to learn this for Sunday. The bridge is kicking my butt. I can only pull it off at 85 bpm, I think the recording is around 114. I won't be able to get it down for Sunday, but hopefully will be able to do in the future. Anyone have any tips for increasing speed and stanima? |

Eventually I just started trying to play it faster than it really is, without the recording. The hard part seemed to be getting the melody in my head. Anyway it worked for me. I played it everyday for a week several times. Now we play it about once a month and it is a breeze. Just stick with it, it will come. |

| | | | The first time that I ran into that one, I did not have enough time to work it at full speed either. So instead of 16th notes (16th note triplets?), I just played it as 8th notes. It sounded different but still good---and only the other bassists could tell that I fudged it. Now I just play it with a pick--which is much easier for me. I can play it fingerstyle too, but have to really "woodshed" to avoid sounding sloppy, and my time to practice is limited.
By the way, here is how to make my "eighth note" cheat sound more authentic. Take a delay pedal that has dotted eighth notes and a foot tap tempo...and put it first inline after your bass. Set it for a single repeat that is equal in volume to the picked/plucked note. Tap the tempo in and hit the delay on for the bridge. It's an old guitar trick. For a video example--look on youtube for "how to use a delay pedal--pre-delay." There's a pretty good one for guitar that shows how to use the effect.
Oh, to answer your question about speed/stamina...play it at a comfortable speed for a week, then bump up the metronome one notch (two at the most). Repeat, every few days trying to go up a notch. You can speed up the process by practicing in very short sessions (15 minutes or so), several times a day. I used to use that method when I was a lead guitar player at church, and had to play a Lincoln Brewster solo with only a few days notice. The trick is to practice frequently, but not for very long. |

| | | | There are free metronomes online, I'd suggest using one of those to determine the tempo. |

Here's a video from the guy who plays it quite often, Matthew Tennikoff.

I've only played for 5 services so far as I'm the fill in bassist. |
