Scale books and notes

I never really learned notes, always played by ear. Now I want to learn. Is there an easy way to remember the notes on the neck? What's a good scale book? or should i grab stuff off the web?

The Hal Leonard Series for Bass Guitar is a good start. Also check out www.StudyBass.com

The Bass Grimoire (sp?) helped and continues to help me, but the Hal Leonard Bass Scales book is a little bit easier to follow and has only more traditional scales. The Grimoire has the regular scales and modes (major, minor, pentatonic etc.) as well as some very cool unconventional ones (persian, 8-tone spanish, hirojoshi, kumoi, pelog, etc.) It also breaks the scales down by intervals and shows their correlating keyboard notes. It is a bit heavy, but very informative and useful.

Thanks! I'll probably order both books. Amazon has them pretty cheap.

All the scales and chords you could ever want.

I have it set for a four stringer with the note names shown, but you can set it for any string/fret combination or have it labeled by tone.

The bass clef tutor on studybass rox!

Give it 3-4 rounds everyday, and in 4-5 days, you'll be set with the F-clef.

The rest is just about practice.

The usual adivce I would give in this case is to try and learn how scales work rather than just learn a bunch of scales. that means learn about modality, interval relationships, chord/scale relationships and so on. Also, as usual, I would recommend that a few lessons with a reputable teacher probably won't hurt either.

at the moment I don't have a bass. still saving for one. I do have a crappy acoustic guitar that will keep my fingers moving for now.

After this post I'm going to buy The Bass Grimoire book( thanks cool and dealy). i was reading the comments on Amazon and it seems to be a good book to learn how scales work.
