Seeking help and advice...

Hi folks, I'm from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Basically I'm a drummer and I'm currently working with a couple of bands. I love playing drums but I happen to be heavily obsessed with the bass guitar as well and I want to start playing bass. Now we don't have music schools here so most of our musicians learn to play their respective instruments either by taking personal lessons or from the internet. We don't have the "Read Music and play" culture here. You wouldn't believe, people here start with listening to different music from early age, learn the basics from veterans who also learned the same way lol and thus form bands or go solo or whatever. People are not really bothered about the concept of reading music and stuff notations or any kinds of grammatical stuff. As a result, they might do a lot of gigs, get popular or even bring out albums but eventually get stuck at a point since they don't have proper academic background. This has been the situation in our country. Please note that, I'm talking about Rock Music in particular.

For me, I learned drums the same way. Surprisingly enough, I have been playing for the last 5 years and still don't have my own kit lol, which really sucks and doesn't really help me to improve my skills. Getting a bass guitar and a small amp at home is a lot easier. So I decided that I'm gonna switch to bass guitar. Now I know a few chords on guitar and a few major scales. I got an acoustic bass guitar and I want to get started. Since I'm a student and I work part time, I think I'll be able to manage 2 hours daily for practice.

Now guys, I am seeking for advice. What would be the techniques to get started with a knowledge of just a few major scales?? help me out guys...

Obviously left & right hand techniques to develop an even, no buzz sound and decent speed & accuracy for the type of music you want to play. Understanding how major scales are formed and how chord tones relate to scales. After that take minor scales and how they relate to major scales and emphasize chord tones. Rhythmically you're probably set so you should concentrate on melody and harmony.

Of course it is; whatever you enjoy playing is good enough. A place I have been enjoying lately is http://www.dmanlamius.com/

I know he's mentioned in the stickies, but guess I've become a bit of a fan of his website heh.
