Seeking Quick Warm-up Exercises

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm forming a band which will be playing somewhat technically demanding music. I will be using all sorts of right hand picking techniques: guitar-style fingerpicking, very fast 2-and-3 finger plucking (think Thrash and Death Metal), strumming, thumb plucking, etc.
I find that it takes me a good 7-10 minutes to get up to speed safely. I mostly just start slowly, doing chromatic runs in the high register, then moving down the fretboard while speeding up the picking.
I would love to find a way to quickly get my hands ready for optimal performance. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Chromatic exercises like that are good, but I would recommend doing it at a set tempo (perhaps with a metronome), this requires more discipline so it conditions the hand better. You can also try staring high on the neck (a similar exercise) and arpeggiate tritones. So the notes would be like this: E (12th fret E string) Bb (13th A string) E (14th D string) etc.. go up and down the arpeggio, then work your way own the neck. This should really stretch out your hand.

I like to do a 10-20 minute practice routine with my morning coffee while i read the news or whatever, I find it makes it easier to get "up to speed" faster later in the day if i have gigs or practices.

I always take 15-20 minutes to warm up before I start practicing. Warming up is the best way to prevent tendonitis. I usually go through two octave Major and minor scales and also do some chromatic exercises. After I've done about half of my scales and excercises, I gradually speed up the right hand picking so I'm playing 16th notes instead of 8th notes at a set tempo. There is a book called "Bass Fitness" by Josquin Des Pres that's good for left and right hand finger dexterity. The excercises are a great work out. Do these excercises and you'll really feel the tendons in your hands quickly . I would take as much time as you need warming up to get to whatever speed you want. It's definitely worth it. I find I can play a lot better and faster when I get a thorough warm up.

I just play random stuff for a few minutes to warm up, and then I get into the working out.

John Myung and his strength exercises at 6:09.
A song pattern, trills, and a chromatic diminished pattern.

Patitucci. This one is killer. Literally.

Teen Town works too.

This might seem stupid, but I sometimes like to use a grip exerciser. I do 30 reps per hand, switching hands every ten. Then when I go to play the bass, my hands get "up to speed" very quickly.

The OP is looking for warm up exercises. While this is a great exercise, you'd need to be well warmed up for it, or you are asking for trouble IMO.
