Serious Electric Bass question

Sign in to disble this ad
In the book Serious Electric Bass by Joel DiBartolo: in Chapter 4, there are some shifting exercises. I am not clear what needs to be done. If you don't have the book, this is Exercise 1:

One Note On the D String.

1st finger: 1-2 / 1-3 / 1-4 * 2nd finger: 2-1 / 2-3 / 2-4
3rd finger: 3-1 / 3-2 / 3-4 * 4th finger: 4-1 / 4-2 / 4-3

Then there are four measures of A quarter notes (G string)

Thanks for your help!

What Joel is saying is pick a note on the D string. For example, pick G, which is the 5th fret. Now, turn on your metronome and alternate playing the G with first your index finger, then your middle finger (1-2).

Next, alternate playing G quarter notes with your index finger, then your ring finger (1-3). Then alternate playing G quarter notes with your index finger, then your pinky (1-4). Then continue this exercise switching between middle & index fingers (2-1), middle and ring fingers (2-3) and middle and pinky fingers (2-4).

Then do ring & index finger alternations (3-1), ring and middle fingers (3-2) and ring & pinky fingers (3-4). Lastly do pinky index (4-1), pinky middle (4-2), and pinky ring finger (4-3) exercises.

let me know if my explanation isn't clear.

These are shifting exercises and not finger-per-fret.
Start as WillPlay4Food said, pick a note on the any string. Then work with your first finger only and play a shift (play the 5th fret, shift and play 6th fret). Then shift 2 frets away and then 3.

Repeat with each finger, but with fingers 2-3-4 you shift downwards as well (2nd finger ****s down one, then up one and up two frets, etc).

The idea behind this is to get used to shift and can change positions smoothly.

Hope this helps.

Ok thanks, that helps a lot. I'll try to figure out which approach works best for me.
