Sher Music Real Books Question

Which ones should I get for starting out? I know to get the "C" versions but I don't want to drop 42 dollars on the wrong things. Should I get the standards book? The standards book and one of the editions of the "new real book" or what?

I have I, II, & III + Shur's The Latin Real Book...for Jazz 'classics', my vote is for Volume I; Volume III is a little "Poppy"(Motown, Stevie Wonder, Michael jackson, etc).

Caveat: I don't have the Standards volume.

What do you want to use them for and what do you expect to get out of them...?

I have all the Sher books - I would say that the Standards (mosaic of the G Clef on the cover) would be the most useful if you don't have any of the "Real" books (1, 2, 3 or LTD).

I have several of them too. I really like Vol.I because there is a lot of standards in it. And I also like "The world's greatest fake book" that came in before Vol.I. There are a lot of nice Funky and Fusion tunes in there.
