I screwed around with a bass in the early 70's. I learned a few patterns and could play a couple of songs... but I ended up trading my bass for a drumset. I've been playing drums ever since.
A couple of years ago I was buying a used snare in a pawn shop outside of Baltimore. One of the guys there was hanging a bass on the wall and I liked the look of it. He handed it to me and I sat down and was still able to play the same stuff as I could thirty-five years before.
Since I was also buying the snare, they knocked some money off and I took it home. I messed with it that day and then stuck it in it's case and forgot about it.
Six months ago I was on youtube and stumbled upon some online bass videos. That was sort of cool. So I dug out the bass, tuned it up and started learning. I bought a used Peavey TNT 160 bass amp and started practicing.
I've gone as far as I can on my own, so now I'm taking lessons. Wow, what a difference! My advice to other newbies is "don't waste your time". Get an instructor that can get you on the road to learning correctly.
