IT CAN BE DONE

There was a dude in a band called Morphine(Mark Sandman? -berg?); played a custom(IIRC)2-string w/a slide.
JPJ has a steel guitar-type 8(again IIRC)bass-thing that must be played w/a slide.

Yes, I've done it. Glass works much better than metal though.

Victor Wooten played slide bass on his latest album, Palmystery. It sound pretty cool.
And glass really does work best.

I like using flatwound strings when using a slide. It sounds smoother.

A fretless bass makes it easier too because you don't have to worry about hitting the frets with the slide.

+1

I used to use a slide tons in Passing Wind. I tried pretty much every slide I could find, and eventually had a friend make me a big ol' heavy bar out of free machine brass. It has some indentations to make it easier to hold on to.This works way better for me than any commercial slide I ever tried. I settled on half rounds as the sweet spot for what I wanted, FWIW.

I use the slide with my right (picking) hand more of the time though, combining bowing techniques and harmonic stops. Big fun, but it takes a lot of practice to get it down IME.

I found out that a half-full Heinekin bottle works great for bass. I held it over-hand, and found it was really useful for some things.
