solo 6 string songs

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there, I've been looking all over the internet with no avail for some solo (or lead bass) songs for 6 string bass (B-C)

Has anyone got any links or anything for me?

Oh by the way its sheet music/tab that I'm after rather than the actual recordings.

Thanks

I don't know of anything written for six string bass. However, lemur-music.com has a lot of bass solo music. Its mostly classical double bass music. You could also try some cello music.

I have a feeling classical music may not be what your looking for but that's all I got.

John Patitucci has an older tune that he does solo on one of his videos called "Our Family." I believe the sheet music (or tab) is available for it in one of his transcription books.

Bach Cello Suites

Cool thread topic. Not sure of any such book out there (might be a fun wiki-style project for the group to work on). Love Patitucci's composition Our Family, great suggestion earlier.

Definitely try some of the Bach Cello Suites, maybe starting with #1 and #5. The Cello Suites lay out really nicely on a 6-er and will give you ideas about what's possible in terms of harmony, voicings and range that will get you going on playing other stuff you like. I've got "scratch tracks" of 1-5 at if you want to take a listen. That's a 5-string EAB with a high C.

editions of cello suites

Tons of popular editions, Kalmus, Schirmer, etc.
You can also buy at www.virtualsheetmusic.com or www.everynote.com

Here's a bit of unasked for advice (sorry, can't help myself, feel free to blast me):

Start your studying with a GREAT RECORDING of the Suites. I think Yo Yo Ma is a really great place to start. 1983 on CBS Masterworks. Play it in your car/iPOD/cd player until you can sing the melodies from memory.

And, on virtualsheetmusic.com you can download MIDI files to practice along with. Use play speed settings on Windows Media Player (CONTROL-SHIFT-S) to practice along at a slower tempo, then bring things up to speed. Then do the same with an actual recording.

I can't find a clip of it anywhere, but "04" by Gojira is a nice solo bass piece.

EDIT: Actually, I'm not sure it's played on a 6'er. But it's still great.
