Solo ideas over chord change: Bm A G

Sign in to disble this ad
At rare times I need to solo, I like to quote recognizable songs. For instance, in an Em section, I will sometimes quote "Roundabout" from Yes.

We have a middle section that's just screaming for a bass solo, but I am drawing a blank. The chords are Bm Asus2 G6.
A few times, I squeezed in "Love Street" from The Doors - but it was a stretch!

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Stairway to Heaven ("and as we wind on down the road ...")

(You'll need to raise it a step.)

Great! That's the type of ideas that work for us.

Wouldn't it be great if we could google chord progressions, like we can word phrases?

I always wanted to write a "midigrep" program to search .mid files for note phrases...

All Along the Watchtower

Or you could, you know, create something.

Aren't these the chords to All Along the Watchtower? The Hendrix version has some wicked bass on it.

I think that Althea from the Grateful Dead used this progression too...

Yes, I think "Watchtower" has that same progression, only Cm instead of Bm. This may be a tangent, but I'm convinced Hendrix played the bass on that tune.

When I solo, I'm looking to quote either recognizable riffs or vocal melodies that people will more or less find familiar.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

I've played the song over 20 times, and I'm getting "writer's block!" LOL

I didn't want to say what the song is, but here I am "getting improviser's block" at about 1:51

Keep in mind that Dylan wrote Watchtower, and the chords (in concert pitch) are C#- B A, although it sounds as though he fingers A- G F with capo IV.

You are 100 percent correct in thinking Hendrix played the bass on this. It is a masterpiece. He was a killer bass player too.

Read this short article, especially page 1 and 2 for more info about Jimi playing bass.

Juliana Hatfield quotes Frosty the Snowman briefly in "You're So Down". Excellent.

Bmin Aeolian is the diatonic scale to use. Bmin pentatonic and Bmin Blues are excellent choices as well.

You don't have to think a scale for every chords since they are all related to the same scale: B min natural or D Major.

Along the same lines, you could also try B Phrygian, as long as no knucklehead plays a maj 3d over that Asus2 chord.

beh. easy. just bounce around Bm pentatonic. that song is stupid easy.

just for fun i tried to put together something with a bunch of melody rather than my usual flying around the blues style.

try something like this:

G---4s7-4--0-----0--2h4
D--4------4-----0---2---
A-2-----------2----0-----
E------------3------------ x2

G---4s11-9-7h9----7------6h7
D--4-------------5-5-5-7-7---
A-2-----------------------------
E-------------------------------

G------------------
D-----------0-2-4-
A-----0-2-4-------
E-0-3--------------

G-0h2h4-0h4h6-0h6h7-0h7h9-11-11-11-11-11p9------
D-----------------------------------------------------11h12
A------------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------------

i copped the chord progression first. no one would expect that on a bass. and then got a little flashy, but not out of control. a big dramatic blues bass walk up, and then knock it home with something sharp. you can get to a high B note afterwards if necessary. open G and A notes to reset. bass doesnt have to be boring.

I, for one, can't stand quotes in solos unless it's obviously a joke.

I would just rather listen to someone's creative output, rather than a quote.

And I would rather see a real person's pic or even an Ampeg logo than a teen idol as an Avatar. We all have our likes/dislikes, don't we!
