Soloing

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I am looking for book or material concerning soloing...I have bought a copy of Ed Friedlands book "bass Improvisation"...but I struggle with it because it doesn´t give many example in one concept and move forward rapidly and I want to hear more ideas in a certain concept before moving on....does anybody have any suggestions??

I have a reasonable knowledge of theory...and would just really like to hear more example on approaches so that I can sit down learn them, understand them and move on to the next concept.

Thanks in Advance

If you are looking for what scale to use over this chord you can not go to far wrong with using the chord's pentatonic scale. That gives you three chord tones and two safe passing notes to draw your melody notes from, and as the melody line and the bass line should share like notes - this gets it done.

I mentioned melody. There has to be some melody in there somewhere ....... Can you play Happy Birthday by ear? Yes we have to start with our patterns, pentatonic scales do this quite well, listen to what is said in this "Masters Class" about what lies beyond those patterns. Let the melody be your guide.

If you answered no to Happy Birthday, start there - one new tune by ear each day - total of 3 each week. Some Where Over The Rainbow, stuff like that right at first.

You can check out my lessons website http://www.scottsbasslessons.com. There's loads of info on there covering soloing etc. If your new to soloing really start to learn your arpeggios as thoroughly as possible and it will pay off in the long run. The Friedland books are great but as with most books also cover a lot of information within a short amount of reading. Jerry Bergonzi (sax player) does some great books covering improvisation... but they're quite heavy. It really depends where you are as a player. I don't know of any bass specific books (yet) that cover all the info you need, or put things into a specific learning plan if you know what i mean. Personally i'd look at the Bergonzi books, specifically 'Melodic Structures' and 'Jazz Line'... these books are very thorough. Also his book 'Melodic Rhythms' is great.

Hope thats of some help,

Easy,

Scott.
