soloing with all notes in the scale

Sign in to disble this ad
so i got a bit of an issue

in my current band we have alot of free jams where we just just choose a key and make some "instant soup" music as we like to call it and i've noticed that i have a few issues with my soloing and probably the one that bugs me the most is the fact that nomatter what key or chord i'm soloing over i can only seem to solo in a penatonic format but sadly everytime i try taking it to the diatonic format my playing sounds much much less musical and it sounds like with the 4th and 7th the only way i can plug them in is by using them with their neighbornotes in a tremolo

any tips as to how i can really jam with the scale? eventually i want to get to a point as victor wooten says "be able to play with all 12 notes and even some other notes and make them musical no matter the key

4th in major or mixolydian is inherently unstable. The seventh is usually a leading tone, can be somewhat unstable but I like the sound. Make sure you are using the correct seventh for the chord. I'd say you're just hearing the qualities of 7 and 4.. Scales are note choices for a situation. You don't have to get them all in, nor are you beholden to using only those notes.

to use all 12 notes, 1 3 and 5 are stable, sometimes 7, particularly in jazz.

Simply target those notes using the other 9. The mountain becomes a molehill.

We are talking about melody - listen to the following video. Watch his right hand:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0iZ1j00wSU
Copy down the information that comes on the screen.

His left hand is a great example of how a simple bass line riff can be used through out the entire song.

Then you may want to spend some time with:
http://books.google.com/books?id=Hty...age&q=&f=false

Two notes close together then a leap of at least a 3rd cought my eye/ear then look what you can do after the leap. It's the after the leap that makes it interesting.

Much easier on the keyboard.

Have fun.

Stay away from the root and the fifth no matter how much you want to start a line with them.

Also, if your time is awesome then it doesn't matter what notes you play, only the melodic shape. Seriously. However, rushing or dragging your rhythms while playing "outside" notes does sound like crap.

i learned the hardway that falling out of the groove is just bassist suicide, i did a gig where i soloed and i fell out of groove and i never played with those guys again, i also got docked some money out of my check lol

i dont' worry about that anymore, i pretty much sent my self through bassist boot camp to always stay in the groove even when soloing

its just playing the same pentatonic licks just feel stale to me, i really wanna make my bass SING
