There are two things you need for a good solo in my opinion.

MELODY!
AND CONFIDENCE!!

Wrong but strong!

Keep your solo as melodic as possible. Try singing it, or singing the solo in your head.
For really heavy solo ideas, check out Pat Metheny. The guy's unreal.

The best advice on soloing I ever got was; have an idea and stick to it. You can take a simple phrase play then play a rhythmic or melodic variation, play the same idea in a different register, in a different place in the measure. I really love hearing soloists that get as much mileage as possible out of a simple idea. There is so much great music to made out of simple ideas.
