So today I was on msn chatting with one of my best friends and he said, he told his cousin i played bass and liked to listen to jaco stuff. Suddenly, his cousin adds me and start attackings me with questions. I've been playing for a bit more than a year and I know some basic stuff. But then he starts saying what should I and what should I not learn, that i shouldn't listen to rock or any kind of music that is not Jazz. I like jazz, but i like also other types of music. I think people like him do not appreciate music |

I think people like that are just being elitists.

It's hard to understand the roll of bass if your only listening to rock. Maybe this guy was just trying to tell you to learn to play some other stuff NOW, or maybe he is, as Jimmy so elegantly put it, being a jazz snob. That being said I love rock and I'll probably be listening to it till the day I die. |

I understand listening to other kinds of music even if I am never going to play it, I got into groups like Graham Central Station, Brothers Johnson, and Sonny Rollins (not a group).
But still never listening to any kind of music but Jazz? That is pure snobbery.

And I think i am the only one who listens to that kind of stuff in my form for example (I am 15). |

And please, PLEASE do not take this as my typical sarcastic/self-deluded humourous crap; your statement makes me realize I definitely have lumped the two terms together. Am I wrong?

Over time, the meaning of words change...for example, "snob" used to mean "shoemaker." "Elitist" is a word whose meaning has changed from "someone who believes in an elite ruling class" to...well..."snob." Heck, I remember a time when people actually used the word "gay" to refer to a state of happiness

I've seen "elitist" used to mean "snob" many times, and I was just truly curious when this definition came to the forefront.
Bassteban, a "snob" is just what you think it is, "one who tends to rebuff the advances of those he regards as inferior, "one convinced of his superiority," "one inclined to social exclusiveness," or "one who blatantly imitates, fawningly admires, or vulgarly seeks association with those he regards as his superiors," whereas an "elitist" is someone who adheres to elitism, which is "[the] belief in and advocacy of leadership or rule by an elite."
In other words, if one believes that, for example, only people with an IQ of 130 or above should be allowed to run for President, that would be an elitist. It has to do with who should be in charge of government; it doesn't mean that someone believes himself to be among that elite class, although the language is changing and it's being used more and more that way, and by extension, to mean that someone believes he is, himself, superior all-around (which is really encroaching on the definition of "snob," if you ask me).
If someone with an IQ of 100, who is completely aware that his IQ is 100, believes that only those with an IQ of 130 or above should be able to run for President, he is, by definition, an elitist, but not a snob.
If someone with an IQ of 100 goes around pretending his IQ is 130 and sneers in disdain at anyone who has an IQ below 130, regardless of politics, he is a snob, but not an elitist.
Hope this helps!

Anyway, etymology is something in which I only have a passing interest, but the older I get and the more I realize how definitions change with the times, it seems to get more interesting to me. Wish I could point out when the tide turned for "elitist," but seems to me it was in the last 10 years or so.
