Something weird happened tonight

Tonight, I focused just on fiddle and bass guitar. One hour each. During my bass guitar time, I realized I wasn't looking at the fret board...and I was still playing the right notes.

It's like, just all of a sudden. It weirded me out.

I pulled the same stunt on the fiddle, too. It's as if I really am learning something. There I am, just staring at the music sheet for Hatikvah, sight reading, and playing without looking.

Getting to that point was a thrill for me because it was the first instrument that I could stray away from playing mentally and still nail a part. And thank God, half my band's songs bore the **** out of me.

Connecting with an instrument like that for the first time lets you know you know you made the right choice.

If you can voice it in your head and you know your instruments well enough, you can easily translate what's in your head onto your instrument. It's an amazing feeling, and can easily prove that you're a competent musician and composer.

The melding of the mind and the instrument is a wonderful milestone for any musician. Reaching true communication from your thoughts into the "real world" is what it's all about!
I know that everyone sings his praises and it can get old, but Victor Wooten has this special way of conceiving something in his head and executing it on his bass with zero loss on the way from synapse to the audience. This is what enables him to do what most mortals can't.
