Old Steely Dan tunes are pretty straightforward.

the first song i learned was "million miles away" by offspring.. its easy but sounds cool and it eases you into more difficult stuff.....

Try some stuff by Bryan Adams E.g. The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me and Summer Of '69.

Oasis stuff is pretty simpe but you are most likely going to get bored playing it.

I would have said that Oasis basslines were 'boring' of there old bassist Guigsy, but on the new album- Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, the basslines are quite fun actually, try 'Go Let it Out' from the new album as a fun little riff

most nirvana is pretty simple, but they have a few difficult songs for a new bassist to play(lounge act, love buzz), but still good. blink 182 also good for learning, but boring as hell once you've played for more than 2 weeks.

Learn "London Dungeon" By the misfits. Very easy bassline, but good practice.

I agree with JMX, with anything by the Police. Try Roxanne, Message In a bottle, and Walking on the Moon.

"Road Trippin'" by the chili peppers is a fun little groove that sounds kind of complex but really isn't ... "Shimmer" by Fuel has a really easy bass line that sounds really good. "Longview" by Green Day is almost a requirement these days "Self-Esteem" and "Dirty Magic" by the Offspring have some really fun riffs, the latter being the first song i learnt on bass. oh, and almost all of Rage Against The Machine's songs, although some of them are a bit hard (particularly "Take The Power Back" if you're a newbie to the low-end side), but try 'em out anyway. groooove on, brudda

Speaking of Greenday, "When I Come Around"'s a good one to learn, it's good for hammer-on's and pull-off's. Same with "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones. Except "I Wanna Be Sedated" helps you learn how to stay with the song after a hammer-on/pull-off.

I started out playing verses to songs that I knew. The first one I learned was self esteem by the offspring, the second Ironman by Black Sabbath. Try things you listen to a lot. I'm a huge Metallica fan, so I got into that quick, and while I wouldn't call myself a really good bass player, I can play some challenging songs. Also, on this site, go to the misc tab sections, and impress all your friends by playing the X-Files theme.. heheh..have fun
