Songs that sound like bass playing

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anyone here have some suggestions for some basic songs to learn that will make me sound like a bass player playing bass?

I know that sounds odd. But most of the songs just involve playing root notes and it just doesn't sound like much by itself.

I want to know some songs that if I was to pick up a bass and start playing in front of random strangers, they'd think "hey, there's a bass player".

Anybody understand what I'm saying?

Anything by Jamerson, Carol Kaye, old Mowtown stuff is awesome, or maybe some Led Zeppelin.

Try some old Larry Norman songs if you want something on the religious side of things. You Can't Take Away the Lord has a really cool bass line imo.

Funk is your friend and the genre of the signature bass line. And you don't have to be a Thunder Thumbs or a Rocco for many if not most of the songs which will make the casual listener take notice.

Funk is definitely your friend. Anytime you bust out the slap in front of people they take notice.

Especially if it's bad.

Don't slap unless you practice it first.

Check Youtube for Ed Friedland (The Bass Whisperer) videos. Pick up some of his stuff and you'll be set.

Anything with Paul Chambers. If you can play what he plays, you are a bass player.

I only wish I could play like Ed. I've tried to play some of his stuff but I can't pick up a line just from watching a video of it, especially slap.

Try these:

Self Esteem - The Offspring
When I Come Around - Green Day
Money - Pink Floyd
Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
Killing In The Name Of - Rage Against The Machine
Come Together - Beatles
Stand By Me - Ben E King
I Saw Her Standing There - Beatles
Higher Ground and Under The Bridge - RHCP

All these songs have recognisable basslines. Some are considered iconic.
