Stage #2 "learn from the same book" nomination thread

Sign in to disble this ad
To prevent confusion with the thread about the concept of doing this ... http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=666529

No more posts of support now. We're doing it!
We only want nominations for books on this thread. Actual book titles. Not "a book by so and so" Preferably with a ISBN so we can all look it up. Even better if you can tell up why you think its great.
Reminder; we need.
1) reading (I dropped the tab idea)
2) CD
3) be available.

plus (we can't please everyone) the MAJORITY of
1) technique like scales and arpeggios
2) styles
3) jazz stuff like harmony and walking
4) rhythms
(That stuff usually comes up in one form or another anyway.)

I'll start this off
The Improvisor's Bass Method: For Electric & Acoustic Bass
http://www.amazon.com/Improvisors-Ba.../dp/0961470100
Sadly there is no CD, probably because the book was published before CDs were popular.

Ed Freidland's Building Walking Basslines. He uses the blues as criteria for most of the book, and walking lines is useful in most all genres.

I also vote for Building Walking Basslines. Partly because I already own it , partly because of the possibility of getting Ed involved in the discussion, but mostly because you can use it in any genre.

I'll vote for the Building Walking Basslines as well as that seems to be an area that currently eludes me.
I already have the bass method 1-3 and am halfway through book 2 already so I'll probably have it mostly finished by the time something is determined here.

I'll second this one. Partly because I already own it yet haven't taken the time to go through it yet. I've heard good things about it.

The Blues Scales:Essential Tools for Jazz Improvisation

BigEgoHead's Book of BigEgoHeadism. Although some people think pretty highly of it...

I vote for Building Walking Bass Lines! Oh wait, is it uncool to vote for yourself?

Not trying to influence the group decision, but if you do pick one of my books, I will make some time to stop in and answer questions. And I won't even go mental on you.

Well, I think I'll have to go with Building Walking Bass Lines then!
Great to hear you'll be helping us out!

Seems to me this should pretty much decide it for us. Thanks Ed!

I am just learning and am going through this book anyway, but I'd love to have a thread to discuss things with other people. (Maybe even add some accountability to my practice schedule!)

I recommend Ed's Blues Bass book...

http://www.amazon.com/Blues-Bass-Ess...5602286&sr=8-1

It's got a CD filled with classic songs and styles. What I like is the music with the tabs. I don't read music, and I hate myself for that. But, what can you do? Buy a book by an enabler like Ed!
