Standards for audition

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, gentlemen. And ladies. Them, too.

I will be auditioning for an international jazz band in about a month, and I'm in need of a standard jazz tune to record and send in as an audition.

I've been recommended for the position, so I need to take seriously the fact that I have a real shot at this.

I've spoken with a few people, who've recommended Miles' 'So What' and a few others. I'm interested to hear, though, what my brethren on the low end would recommend as a display of both skill and perfection in simplicity (comfortable walking, basically.) It needs to be a standard, but I'm sure the definition of a standard is pretty lenient. No neo-funk-jazz fusion, basically.

Also, any recommendations as to where I can find "karaoke-style" tracks where I can pull out the bass and play along would be appreciated.

Thanks,
~Wes

BestPractice-free, easy to use, ,slow downer/pitch shifter/looper(can record/loop modified section)/vocal remover/karoake,isolate bass/treble(bass backing track maker)

uh there is this guy named Jamey Aebersold that has LIKE 150 RECORDS LIKE THAT spanning the complete history of jazz from ragtime to ultra modern.

http://aebersold.com/Merchant2/merch...ry_Code=AEBSTA

Bass on one channel, piano/guitar on the other, so you just kill whatever channel you don't want.

Yeah, my school has a full library of the Jamie Abersold books. We make fun of his little "One, two, one two three four...." all the time.

Thanks, man!

Also, thanks for removing the snarkiness

Seeing as how you're going to apply for an international jazz band I'm going to assume that you already know a bit about jazz.

It's supposed to be straight-ahead, four on the floor walking right? If that's the case, I'd suggest "Autumn Leaves", "Summertime", "Mr. P.C", and "So What" or "Impressions". If I think of anymore I'll recommend them.

Good tunes. I played Summertime last year, so I know it already. Might pull that out of rep and record it, good suggestion. Thanks!

try something a little less common. it will let them know that you've done more than just scratch the surface with jazz. here are my suggestions.....

"our love is here to stay", "my shining hour", "there will never be another you", "solar", "someday my prince will come", "alone together", "beautiful love", "stella by starlight"

the list is really endless. i'd say listen to some classic cd's, and pick a couple tunes that stand out to you

Do you have the Real Book? If you do, go through it; otherwise, try getting it and picking out of of there.

I'll follow j. stemmler's idea and suggest some others you can do:
Minority
Misty
Oliloqui Valley

Ooh. Thanks, Stemmler. I'm a fan of Stella By Starlight, especially after hearing the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra play it live. Rudreax, thanks for your suggestions - I've yet to procure the real book, but I need to. It's been on my to-do list for some time now.

Doxy, or Rhythm-a-ning. Walking well over rhythm changes is a big plus IMO. Wish I could do it well.
