I find playing multiple instruments to be wonderful. Plus, when you take it into your head to mess with yet another, you have more experience to draw on and can start playing music right away rather than spending years as a beginner. For instance, I'm learning the trumpet now, with nothing but a fingering chart, which I can do because I've been playing the horn for years. I (or anyone here) was able to mess around on the mandolin as soon as I got one, due to my bass and guitar playing experience. You won't start out great, but you'll be able to start with music instead of the not-so-fun complete beginner stuff.

Very good! In all, I've taken piano for about 7-8 years, and it's instrumental in my knowledge of theory. It will definitely help exercise your sense of melody and harmony. Even your rhythm will improve, I've found that mine has!

I'd suggest you find a good teacher and get some lessons, too.
