Strange question (maybe not)

Hello,
I'm a guitar player of 10 years and i just bought my first bass. I've been learning some rush songs and as we know Geddy hits those strings pretty hard to get a nice growl. Well on my E string the sound of the string hitting the frets seems to be a lot louder than usual, it almost drowns out the sound of the note. I dont know if i'm tapping too hard or my right hand is in the wrong spot, when i turn down the treble i barely get any growl so i know it's not that. I know this is kind of a weird question but just wondering if i could get some feedback.
