What do you mean by "string growl"?

Are you getting a buzzing sound, like the string vibrating against the frets?

If so, your neck may be too tight (buzzing between your fretting finger and the headstock), too loose (buzzing between your fretting finger and the bridge), and/or your strings are too low.

If you're not familiar with how to setup a bass (adjusting the truss rod, saddle height, intonation etc), see if there's a local luthier who can help you. Or you can read about it online (many resources, too numerous to mention).

I'm not sure exactly what you are talking about but to me "growl" means high mids. Which can actually help cut through the mix a little bit depending on what kind of sound you are going for. But you might just need to tweak your eq settings on your amp. What kind of bass/amp are you using?

Yep how do you describe growl --- I'll let a local bass player (one of my band mates) hear what I'm talking about. Thanks for your help......

I describe it as "nearly overdriving slightly and digging into the strings"

You either need a setup or need to practice playing with a lighter touch. The lighter you strike the strings the stronger your fundamental.

MalcomAmos-
Reading this it appears you're experiencing what is known as "fret buzz," which could indicate an improper neck setup or improper finger placement. Placing your fretting fingers equally between the frets increases fret buzz; placing them closer to the fret decreases it. First ensure your technique is correct. One practice that also helps me is to have a new bass or guitar setup 30 days after I've brought it home, which makes sense since I've had enough time by then to determine what adjustments are needed.*

*'sense' and 'since' together in the same sentence; only in the English language
