| Muting is important to clean techinque. There is both left and right hand muting, palm muting, Rocco-style for 16th's and muting for slap. They all are easier to show than explain. There are a couple videos floating around the internet. Todd Johnson has a YouTube video that shows Floating Thumb technique. It is a right hand muting that is okay for four-string, but for five and especially six string basses is essential. Gary Willis has a few videos on YouTube and other places on the net. There should be one on his right-hand finger muting.
As for other muting techniques probably best if you try to do them and then ask specific questions. Most people start by working on left hand muting. It involves using the back of your fingers to mute strings below the one our fretting. Also depend on which finger you just used to play a note with you will use a finger to lightly touch the string as you move to another string. Also in left hand to shorten notes when playing same note multiple times you just lift your finger a little. Just enough to unfret the note, but finger is still on string enough to mute it. That one take time to avoid fret rattle.
Try some of that and then ask questions.
