OK you know how to write baselines, how about melody lines? Like you mentioned - gotta break away from mode patterns and start
using the notes of the mode, i.e. you gotta sooner or later get into how to write melody lines. If you would like to explore that here are some sites that I found helpful.

All mention leaping, IMO where you land and what you do next is the key to this.
Then making sure the baseline and the melody line work together (harmonize) rounds out the process.
