Suggest something for my lesson today.

I took last month off because I was too busy but I'm starting back with a teacher this month. Suggest something for me to work on.

I know you need to know where I'm at as a player, where I want to go, all that jazz but I don't want to type all that. Just toss out ideas that you think are interesting or what you are working on.

Two good ideas but both have been beaten severely.

Anything else?

Put a little twist on Danny's suggestion and worked on some alternate ways to incorporate those modes in my actual playing live.

Suggestions for next week are welcome!

OK you know how to write baselines, how about melody lines? Like you mentioned - gotta break away from mode patterns and start using the notes of the mode, i.e. you gotta sooner or later get into how to write melody lines. If you would like to explore that here are some sites that I found helpful.

http://books.google.com/books?id=Hty...age&q=&f=false
First 30 pages will outline the process. Gets way deep after that.

Copy the hints that appear on the video screen. Breathing room, and leaping IMO are worth looking into.

http://smu.edu/totw/melody.htm
Contour or Wave Action - as explained on this site made since to me. It also touches on the leaping process.

All mention leaping, IMO where you land and what you do next is the key to this.

Then making sure the baseline and the melody line work together (harmonize) rounds out the process.
http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...he+melody+line

That is keeping me busy....... Not an over night project - it's a process.

Have fun.

Both suggestions you just dismissed can be taken to places I doubt you've imagined.

And they'd both be extremely beneficial to your playing.

Agreed! I'm not sure if you noticed but I ended up working on some modal issues that I hadn't really discussed with him before. I have no problem working on both of those things and need to spend more time on them both but, since I only have a limited amount of time with my teacher, I like to always have stuff new to work on with him and continue wood shedding the stuff we work on at home. Basically, I don't like wasting his time with stuff we've been over just because I don't practice enough, lol.

Anything for this week?

I'm thinking about asking if there is a "best" way to incorporate learning DB at the same time that I'm working on electric stuff. I can "play" electric just fine, I'm just not where I want to be yet but I'd like to start learning DB, too. I just don't want to hinder either or end up retarding my development by taking a shortcut... Any thoughts?

As no one has jumped on this ---- I don't see that you will be hurting anything. I feel that any new instrument only increases one's understanding of music. I had to look up the DB's fretboard and found they are the same so I really find nothing that would hinder your electric bass endeavors.

Ascend and descend a scale by thirds all up and down the neck. Play the tonic (1st), then the third of that note, the supertonic (2nd) then the third of it, etc.

You can practice this in major keys, minor keys, modes, etc. It will help your familiarity with the scales, knowing the scale all over the neck, and help your fretting hand coordination
