Most people today start out with tabs from the net only. A book is great!
I myself started on www.ultimate-guitar.com + pirate downloaded music.
Now, I like the challange of picking out notes from songs with just my ear and the music. I get a happy feeling when i find the right notes to fill out the riff or whatever im pickin' out.
Edit: I forgott to tell you but. Www.Youtube.com is pretty much a complite teachers brain you can put keywords in.

You should make reading music a part of your practice.

Reading standard notation is definitely a good skill to have. There are many books available and probably some online resources too.

It's a big benifit if you can learn to read sheet music.

When I teach bass and guitar I always leave it up to the student to learn to read. However, I teach every note up and down the neck. Then I teach different scales.

This helps get your fingers moving and used to the fretboard.

I am self taught. My lessons recieved have only come recently.
