TALKING BASS VS. PLAYING BASS

Sign in to disble this ad
On those rare occasions when I take a break from music and check out this site, I notice a lot of the same names popping up and writing long-winded replies in different forums. So for those people, how much time do you dedicate to talking about bass versus actually playing it? Just curious.

I know you're not talking about me, but one explanation for it is this.

I have access to the internet at work, I do not have access to my bass.

This.

And when I was working nights, I'd be on both all night. I was playing for about three hours solid out of a cute Crate guitar amp. It was awesome.

I usually practice an hour a night, and then 4-6 hours on each weekend night.....but the OP has made an EXCELLENT point...and it is something I wonder about often when I see so many posts from people like ******, and others......I won't name names, but check any Jauqo III-X thread, and look at the names of those trying desperately to prove him wrong...they know who they are!

It takes a minute or two to get on here and read and maybe post, then on to practice. I practice bass an hour and a half or so, guitar an hour and a half or so then work on bands things on the instruments.

I do all of my practicing at the computer as I dont have a stand alone metronome at the moment and cant justify buying one when I can just use the computer anyways so I will check the forum here and there.

I do check it a lot for 9 hours a day while at work though :P

Since you are curious.

I'm retired so I have time. I check into the forum several times a day and I may not practice any today. I belong to two bands average 7 to 8 gigs a month and play the same songs over and over. If we add some new songs, sure I’ll give them some practice time, but, other than that bass, as it is with you, is just one of my hobbies. I give it the time I deem necessary.

Good question.
I am on when I couldn't practice. I gig regularly in every genre doing a lot of originals. I even do avante garde experimental stuff. I play small coffee houses, weddings, house concerts, art gallery openings and large outdoor concerts. I am in five different bands.
I am gas free because of TB but do check in to learn about gear. Two amazing preamps wouldn't have come my way if I hadn't known about TB. Conversely, the arguing is getting tiresome.

Oh, I get it...this is one of these "I don't talk, I PLAY" posts. To quote the great Beetlejuice from the Howard Stern Show, "Goo for you!"

Don't worry about how much I play, bro. I play plenty. I play it for a living, I play at a pretty high level backing big oldies festivals with original artists, I do a lot of sub work around here playing everything from jazz standards to new rock and roll and dance music, and people on here who have heard me play like my playing and respect it. That's all you need to worry about when it comes to me.

Thank you

Hey, I've been playing and practising 35 years or thereabouts. So by now I've got plenty to talk about.

As far as practise goes, I never do enough. I don't even know how much enough is. I've never done enough, even before we all got the Internet. So I do admire dedicated beginners. They'll probably be able to learn to do what I do in just 20 years or so, maybe even less.

I wonder who he's talking about?

I'm on here (and other internet places) way too much, for sure.

I gig 4-6 nights per week, it's how I've made my living for the past two decades. I rehearse material for gigs a few hours a week in there as well.

Doesn't pay as well as some jobs (ok ... most jobs) but i have a lot of free time, evidently!
