"TAXMAN" (Harrison) bass demonstration

My Fellow Americans,

Here’s a gentle reminder that you have less than one week to file your taxes. I’ve had a strange experience with this tune….

About six weeks ago I was walking in the streets of Buffalo during the time when the white snow changed to sooty ice and was melting into the sewers. I was listening to the live George Harrison recording of Taxman with my headphones. Just as he sang “Declare the pennies on your eyes” I looked down in the gutter and spotted two pennies that probably had been buried all winter. Even weirder, they were Canadian pennies,,, as in The Commonwealth.

Check the link below.

George Harrison wrote that song because the top rate of income tax in the UK at the time (1966) was 95% - literally "one for you and nineteen for me" from the Taxman's point of view. However that rate kicked it at a level that mere mortals would never earn .....

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman
Yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five percent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman
Yeah, I'm the taxman

Great of you for the reminder, and nice vid! I sent my taxes in on April 8th, for three different jobs I'm thinking I might get a return of ~$50... That's what I get for being a university student, working during the Summer. Sigh... Oh, to be young

This tune is a perfect example of how Sir Paul added so much to simple, but already good idea that he pushed it right over the top... including the lead guitar(!) His manner of speech, his body movements... all of it is represented in his always full of life sound.

(even though I was required to file my NY state tax, NY state as deemed that THEY will withhold my refund until they're ready)

...did The Beatles ever do "Taxman" live?
By Revolver, they were pretty much a 'studio band'.
I do have a Harrison Live In Japan disc with "Taxman" (probaby Willie Weeks on bass).

I believe that is Nathan East with the rest of Clapton and his backup band at that time. Great album, by the way.....

There are some references to George playing bass on Taxman whilst Paul played lead.

It's definitely McCartney on bass & the guitar solo.

Cool! I agree on the solo, but there have been conspiracy theories about the bass. I'm old and fat, so it won't be too long before I can ask George myself!

It's too bad asking Paul wouldn't help. Ringo never has anything to add either.
