teachers pay

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, Ive been searching the forums, but cant seem to find an answer..... what is the average pay for teaching??

I have been talking with some people who run a music lesson place who are looking for bass and guitar teachers. This is something I would not have a problem to do.

I am wonder what a fair rate would be. It would be for both in the store and at the students home

thanks in advance

I currently pay $40 per hour, and this is a fair rate, considering two previous teachers.

If you are looking at what rate to charge, there are several factors.

1. Who is your target audience? Are you interested in teaching beginners? Intermediate players? Advanced? You might not get away with a high price with beginners. If you can, congratulations. The world is full of suckers who want to part with their money.

2. With the lessons you provide, what do you think they are worth? What would you pay for someone to tell you what you tell your students?

3. Some music stores take a percentage of a lesson fee, to make a minor profit as well as to cover overhead, etc. If this is unacceptable to you, make sure to increase your price (slightly) to compensate you for your lesson, so all parties are pleased.

4. You need to make sure that your student wants to come back. The first lesson is always the most critical - I always ask, "Is this teacher worth seeing again? If so, is the cost worth it?"

I hope this helps. I would love to teach bass, but graduate studies get in the way!

The rates vary with the where you are located. Around here an hour lessons run from $50 on up depending on quality of the teacher. You teach in a store they take a cut for collecting money, handling cancelations, providing room, and doing some advertising. Stores I've taught in I got paid even if student flaked out and didn't cancel a day ahead. It was worth them taking some for that service. I showed up, taught, got paid, went home.

First I would check out other teachers in the area and see what they charge. I would also search the internet for various Music Stores, Lesson Studios, and Private Teacher home pages to see what people charge and what their policies are regarding attendence, cancellations, payment, etc... I have gained wealth of information this way, and you get to keep tabs on, and get ideas from, your competition.

The most important advice I can give is have all of your policies in writing and make sure the student and or parent is fully aware of everything upfront. My students all sign a copy, as well as recieve one for their own reference. That way if there is a dispute of any sort, they can't say you never informed them.

Don't forget you are running a business, so don't be afraid to hold people accountable for paying you. Good luck.
