Hello everyone,

A while back I posted about writing a funky bass solo. Well I made one that would have to do until my band teacher taught me how to write solos. Well basicly He didn't like but never told me, so then I go to play my solo and he just points to the sax player, < so mad, I didn't even play the accomp part I was so mad. Later I found out it was because he didn't like the solo I wrote, I mean can't he just tell me? come on people need to think sometimes. But it's only a few measure, just kind of like a filler solo, the big 16 measure ones got handed to the guitar and sax and I got the 8 which I'm fine with since its my first bass solo, and I am not a super fan of the electric bass (I mean I love bass but string bass for me guys sorry). Any who, I was wondering if it is acceptable to use other people's licks or patterns at a little filler solo. Like that melody bass lick of Rio funk, transposed and fiddled around a little of course.

Well...
If you meant by exactly copying the solo than no...
But just really using bits and pieces as a concept of building your own solo than it's ok.
We all do that when we learn how to improvise.
Thats why i think one of the best ways to learn how to phrase right is by learning other people stuff.
Just think of all the licks you learn as a new word for your own never stop growing dictionary. You start small and eventually it grows.

Good Luck
