Hey, what's wrong with the band?

You could always take piano lessons.

Get a tutor, a decent one that will teach you relevant theory. If you want to know my opinion on what a good tutor should teach and theory browse through my posts relating to teaching or theory.

Check with your local college/university or community college for intro music theory courses. They usually have ones for non-music majors that don't require prior knowledge or experience. I'm doing that at my university this semester.

There are no magic solutions, but you need instruction. It must come from self, private teacher, pals, or school.

Have you considered learning String Bass (double bass) and playing in the orchestra? In fact, many wind ensembles and concert bands have String Bass players, as well as tubas. Composers often include string bass parts in concert band scoring. See if your band teacher can help you.

If you go this way, it is also possible to read and play tuba parts, but they are notated at pitch and thus look an octave lower than string bass parts.

I vote for join the band or orchestra and take theory there. Then, this summer get a job and pay for lessons with a really good private tutor.

Aloha!

Cool. Seems to me that with the bass and piano you have done, you might try AP!!

What is your biggest problem/worry?

I dont know anything about theory really...i mean i know a few scales....not much and im really just trying to improve my bass. How i play, how good the lines i make up are, being more creative. making more creative basslines, etc,etc

At least go talk to the AP Theory teacher and feel it out.

I hate to tell you this, but how good the lines you make up are, improving your playing, being more creative and making more creative basslines tend to be proportional to how much you know about theory. If you can't afford a tutor then I suggest you do as much reading about music theory as possible. There are plenty of online resources. I don't know how old you are but have you considered getting a part time job to cover some lessons?

The point of taking a class (ie AP Music Theory) is to learn stuff you don't know yet If you knew it before you took the class, it would be a review, not a course You really should talk to the Music teacher like Warfrat73 said. I took my share of APs that I knew nothing about and did fine. After all, school is about learning stuff, right?
