Theory Trivia: What's it called when a minor song ends on a major chord?

Sign in to disble this ad
It's pretty common in hymnal music and a couple traditional Christmas tunes.

I keep thinking it's something like Piccadilly Third or something, but that's not right...

Anyone? It's driving me nuts. My googling skills have proven weak.

The picardy third was really popular in the classical world, and often 18th and 19th century editors "rewrote" the end of baroque pieces like Bach fugues to have picardy thirds just to be in vogue. The major third was far more harmonious and final-sounding than the minor third, so it only made sense that the end of the piece should end on a tonic major triad. A lot of composers found it painfully cliché, however, and went to great lengths to avoid it. Mozart ended his Requiem with an open fifth (power chord!) just to avoid it, for example. He couldn't have ended it with a minor triad because it didn't sound as final, and he thought the picardy third would sound trite, so he just powerchorded it. Quite metal.

the yes tune 'roundabout' is a good example of this closing in pop music. later, ron

(it sounds trite, they should've ended it with a pete-townshend style root/fifth power chord LOL)

Excuse my ignorance here, but I know absolutely nothing about Theory (however, that doesn't mean that I didn't find this to be an interesting topic).

The example of a Picardy Third at the end of Roundabout - are you referring to the very last chord of the song?

Wow, this thread continued. Check out the endings of And I Love Her (Beatles) and Hello (Lionel Ritchie).

in justin bieber's world, you would be hailed as a musical genius.

picardy third, eh? i always just called it "ending a minor song with a major chord." then again, i didn't grow up dressing like little lord fauntleroy and eating caviar for breakfast.
