I bought this set after the local music teacher told my 11 year old son that in order to play bass in jazz band he would have to take up another instrument (and pay for the lessons and the instrument) and play it in marching band. He already plays piano and doesn't care anything about playing the bass drum or the bells. So after discussing it with him I told him that I would give Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar a try. My thinking was that if it occupied him for two months worth of lessons it will have paid for itself. I have three kids and all take music lessons, It gets expensive.
I bought the set on Friday and it was at the house on Monday. I live in Tennessee so it didn't have to be shipped very far. Unfortunately I had to pay TN sales tax.
Back to the story-The packaging for the set is impressive and the user interface is awesome. I can't read music so the animated fretboard is great for me. My son reads music like a champ so the sheet music display works great for him. Along with each lesson a loop library is included and we seem to spend most of our time on it. Just start the loop and jump in and out when you want to.
A book is not included in the set but you can print out the book via PDF files or you can order them from the website. The book is cool (especially if you can use someone else's laser printer to print it out because it is pretty big).
Since I bought the set my son has been practicing with this thing every day. He absolutely loves it. I don't think he will just blaze through this thing either. Each DVD has a boatload of information on it.
I told a guy that works in my building and turned me on to talkbass.com that after having spent the money to get the little dude a setup that he can play I think the money spent on Teach Me Bass Guitar was a better buy than the Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass I picked up at an auction. I highly recommend this for anyone starting out playing bass guitar. On a side note-Roy mentions several famous bassists in the DVD and it's pretty cool seeing your 11 year old Googling and YouTubing bassists like Jaco and Carol Kaye.
