Ties and slurs

I am learning how to sight read and am just being introduced to the concept of a "slur" marking. It looks just like a tie to me. How to tell the difference?

Ties are connected to the same note. Like an A is tied to an A to increase the length of the note. Slurs occur between two different notes and denote a stylistic change.

Ah! Never noticed that! Cool, thanks! Although I must say that the hammer on & pull off exercise that I'm working on does have a couple spots in it where a F is connected to another F. Does that mean that marking is a tie and all the rest are slurs?
