Tips for learning a new song

I'm interested in hearing how folks approach learning a new song from sheet music. So far I will play each note in a measure slowly until muscle memory sets in and I can play the song in proper time. Any other ideas?

I generally play slowly a few times. work up a tempo, then rip it all apart and go back to playing super slow... I think taking your approach might hinder not knowing what it sounds like.
