don't stop practicing

think of how the bass compliments the music, not how the music compliments the bass

First learn about the bass, learn about notes and scales, and then play bass.

first, realise no-one's going to do the hard work for you... and there are no shortcuts.. I guarantee you won't be thrilled by the most useful tips people here will give you, because they're all variants of 'work hard'

practice

practice

then more practice

both on your own in the woodshed and with other musicians... try and get yourself into situations where you have to play as many different styles as possible.. you'll become a better musician for it..

funnily enough, if you're aspiring to be like Cliff Burton you'll not get there unless you listen and play widely beyond thrash metal as you learn... so many metal musicians handicap themselves by only ever listening to metal

um...in order to do this for you, we would basically have to recreate the entire talkbass forum website...your topic is way to broad...try using the search feature if you have any specific questions, or if you cant find an answer, then post a topic asking specific questions.

first, figure out what you want to (learn to) play.
second, get a good teacher to help you along
third, practice
fourth, practice
fifth, practice
sixth, practice
...
...
...
...
...
ninety ninth, practice.

(get the idea?)

If you're serious about it get a good teacher, to teach you basic chord progressions, reading music, learning all notes on the fretboard, etc.

i am still learning but i have one tip

branch out...if you listen to alot of rock and just easy simple bass lines that follow roots the whole song, then learn some jazz. its very fun to play and alot more difficult than rock bass.
