Tommy Shannon DVD

Sign in to disble this ad
Tommy Shannon's old tape is now available on DVD.
It's called:
Tommy Shannon: Double Trouble Bass

Anybody have any idea if it's good? Is it just basic stuff, or does it move beyond that?

Reviews?

[I love the way he plays.]

There is one user review out at Amazon. Not much to go on, but it is a pretty positive one:

Thanks. Yes - please post a review.

What's your guess - is it a beginner only video, or something an intermediate could get something out of?

I'm guessing and hoping that it is not a beginner video, and that it is more geared to intermediate and advanced intermediate.

I have it. I like it a lot. I haven't gone through the entire DVD but if you like blues you will love it. He shows different blues licks and techniques about how to play the bass.

I have always been a huge SRV fan and have always loved Double Trouble. Tommy is a great player IMHO.

I think it is money well spent.

Any new viewers of the DVD care to comment on it?

I just rented it from Netflix.

It is pretty good. It is at beginner/intermediate level. Tommy's obviously not the most charismatic instructor but he plays some really tasty stuff that really makes sense in the context of a song.

My only beef is that the darned DVD arrived without a booklet. I guess they didn't want to give it it's own envelope.

Sigh.

Well worth having seen though. Maybe I'll buy it later.

Had a chance to review the Tommy Shannon DVD.

As stated, Tommy is nice and informative, but very reserved. Tommy does a great job of going over some nuances of playing the bass, especially on some of the SRV songs (how to replicate the sounds that he put out on the recordings)

I'm just starting to dive into some SRV and Double Trouble songs, and this will be a great help. But if you have no interest in SRV & Double Trouble (hard to imagine), I don't know that this DVD would be a must.

Is the audio good enough. One reviewer said, at times, the bass was too buried to hear what's really going on.

No, the audio is fine.

His tone has most of the treble rolled off, that's all.

It fits really well in the mix.

Actually, not only do I think the sound is good, I think they bring out the bass so that you can hear it even better.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I have been a sucker for materials all my life, and I have quite a stack of stuff here that's either not right for me or just plain a waste of time.

I have actually come across very few DVD's in my travels that were worth a second look. There are few out there, but the percentage is small.

I wish there were more Intermediate/Advanced materials related to the blues.

Anyway, I'll probably pick this DVD up. Thanks again.
