Transcribing hard-to-hear basslines

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

I was thinking about doing some transcribing from some jazz records and older rock stuff, but of course the bass can often be buried in the mix with these recordings. Now, someone had suggested Audacity, which can boost the bass, but interface has me a bit confused:

Is there any particular frequency I can focus on to get the best results? Would you use the same frequency for a Paul Chambers bassline that you would for, say, a Bill Wyman bassline? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I know there's the trick of putting the pitch up an octave, but the "chipmunk factor" often drives me up the wall.

Frequency will be trial and error (unless others have better starting points).
Regardless you'll eventually cut out all the high of the mix to get to the bare bones of the bass lines. Yet that may result in losing clarity of the line's notes...

Hmmm... perhaps anyone have a master track, LOL?
