"Transcribing" music in your head

When I'm stuck listening to music I'd rather not listen to, I sometimes pass the time by visualizing the melody in my head as it would appear written on the bass clef. I don't have perfect pitch, so I just assign the first note of the melody a random place on the staff, and use interval recognition to work from there. Anyone else do this?

I try to take the notes I'm hearing and place them on the fretboard, kind of like tabbing them out but on a fretboard, not on paper. It's a good way to train my ear and it gets easier and easier the more I do it too.
