I've decided to start diving into transcription, and was wondering what you guys started with? What songs? What tips can you offer?

As defined here http://www.music.vt.edu/musicdictionary/ transcription from one key to another is a piece of cake.

Put the two scales or keys over each other the old I chord becomes the new I chord, the old V becomes the new V.

If you know the melody notes used in the old scale and you want to take it to a new scale - again put the old on top and the new on the bottom and transpose away.

If you are talking about transcription from listening to the song and writing down the notes. Good luck. That's all ear work and takes a bunch of practice.

transcribe music you love, rather than music you feel you OUGHT to transcribe

you'll spend so long doing it that it needs to be music you love, or you'll go bananas

my tip - do it one bar at a time... do it one beat at a time if you have to... one NOTE at a time if you have to

if you have a hard passage (oo-er missus), you might find it useful to transcribe the rhythm first, then the pitches

if it's mega hard, stick it into Cubase and create a 'grid' of bars by matching the tempo so you can stick bars on repeat... you can also set it to repeat tiny fragments like 1 note so you can isolate pitches... if your bar grid that you've overlaid on the track is accurate, you can also accurately isolate rhythms and work out where notes land... obviously you don't need this for most stuff, but I did a bunch of extremely hardcore Zappa transcriptions, and sometimes you have to get scientific on stuff like that's ass
