I just stumbled across this interesting site... http://www.gearchange.org
it's a site all about corny key modulations in popular music, believe it or not |

I've always said that they are the last resort of a song writer. It's funny you posted this because it was just today at work when there was some song on the radio I don't know what it was but what I can remember was cringing and saying Auuugh! what a horrible key change! as it modulated higher. It does grind my gears (no pun intended) when I hear them.....not enough to start a website about it. But I do agree they should be wiped out. On the other hand radioheads karma police has a good key change at the end.

I have to say, though, that there are exceptions to everything, and for me an exception to the general and largely deserved disdain heaped on this musical device is Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady." In the hands of a genius, even a cliche can work. At times.

That site kicks ass. I made a submission for The Stray Cat's "Rev it up and Go". That song has a key change on almost every verse.

I have trouble believing that either Fagan or Becker would do it just to extend a song, or because it was unnecessary. |
