Tuning a 4 String With a 61 Key Keyboard

Sign in to disble this ad
Can it be done at all or are all? If I am reading the frequency charts correctly, the lowest note on one of these keyboards is the second "C" on a full piano keyboard (C2 ?). Does this mean that the E and A strings fall below that note? If one can tune a bass with one of these, what's the best way to do it?

Just hit the note that's the same as the one you're trying to tune It doesn't matter how much higher or lower. The way it sounds you've never done this before - you might have better luck with an electric tuner until later.

Yes, it can be done. Tune your D-string to D2 and your G-string to G2. Then tune your A-string at the fifth fret to your open D-string and then your E-string at the fifth fret to your open A-string. You could also tune the harmonic at the 5th fret on your A-string to A4 and the harmonic at the 5th fret on your E-string to E4.

Thank you for the replies. Getting a tuner would be logical except that I just got the bass and amp last month and spent close to $900 out of the $500 I planned to spend so I really can't buy anything else at the moment. I'm sure that any of you who saw a Peavey Grind when you were looking at Squiers and bottom of the line Ibanezes would have done the same thing.

As long as you are comfortable tuning by ear then it shouldn't be a problem as long as you have a correct reference note. However, a tuner is pretty cheap these days. A solid Korg one can be picked up for easily less than 20 bucks.

+1 You can also hit a harmonic on the bass to raise the octave of the open string on the bass.
