Tuning Question

I've got a basic Korg bass tuner and I'm getting slightly different results when I plug directly into it vs. using the mic. I think it reads more flat when I use the mic. Regardless, my ear isn't well trained yet and I was wondering if one method was typically more accurate than the other?

Plugging into it is about 1000x more effective for a few reasons, including other musicians (drummers!).
