Question TURNAROUNDS: BORING OR COLORFUL??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all. I have the bad habit of using turnarounds A LOT when I play since they seem to make my scales more complete. Can this eventually bore your audience? I know Tejano/Norteno bassists use them like they were going out of stye. Any opinions??

Ya, be a little more specific about what you mean. But as a general rule, I'm for whatever works, but I don't like to wear ideas out, so I guess it's a judgment call. At least until I understand what you mean.

Best turnaround I've everheard was in the intro to "Marmoset > Baked Potato" by Jason Ricci. Sadly I can't find this song anywhere. Ricci is the greatest harp player ever.

Track 2, if you're interested

Turnaround definition...I think??

Stumbo, BTW a turnaround is the use of a 7th note to come back to the root note, sort of like a loop in your scales, even if the song's in I-IV-V pattern. Best way I can describe it???

BTW, are you really 100?? Wow! Cent'anni...congrats!

In that case, my advice stands as it is

There are so many turnarounds, from ii- V - I, to extended iii - vi - ii - V - I, and all the tri-tone substitutions and combinations, and the "Coltrane Changes" - it's pretty hard to get bored or sound boring. Plus it's fun coming up with yer own!

Here's a great book for study.

I'm trying to think of one AC/DC song that uses a turnaround, and I'm stumped, so no, you shouldn't use them

But seriously...it's all in the context of the music. I'm not big on throwing one on the end of a phrase for the sake of looking clever. Maybe the word for it isn't boring, but it can be a bit much if overused.
