Having been through most of the threads on theory and all things that touch theory this morning, there is more than enough information on talkbass to make an easy and concise introduction to music theory is two distinct parts or chapters. The first part is an introduction explaining Pitch, Rhythm, Simple notation forms, Scales and Keys, Melody.
Part 2 could deal with advanced rhythms, Sight Reading, Harmony, Arrangement.. taking in Transposition, Ornamentation, and Practical application for what has have learned.
If each part is giving a Rehearsal letter, and when questions need to be asked, and they will, the Rehearsal letter can be used to indicate which part is the problem saving time and misunderstandings.
We don't have to write one its all here, maybe an Administrator can cut and paste one together with all the relevent points from the most constructive posts to build a working document as a sticky? |

Its almost like "a Dummies Guide to Music Theory" is needed.
Its all here i have seen it but it is over years and many many strings and post. All i say is organise it all and there is the unified writings on Music Theory in two posts with out searching lots of different post and strings as well as ideas in their first encounters with music theory. Just a thought. |

Too many different musical backgrounds, terminology, egos, attitudes and on and on. That isn't even factoring in the urban myths like musical ignorance == playing with a feel and pentatonic like 42 is the answer to all questions.
Now all the reasons I gave above are also what make this forum interesting and can be educational. My biggest concern is some of the bickering scaring noobs making think theory is hard or overly complicated.

I think we need a sticky explaining that music theory is not just modes and arpeggios. Where is the thread on harmonic analysis, strict 4-part harmony and sonata form? |

OK, just stirring the pond, no real need to answer that ; } |

Good try and good idea BUT.........................
There is too many thread killers here on TB. unfortunately!
There is a lot of good info here on TB but it gets blur in the mix !!!
A good knowledge of theory makes bass players better musicians not just root players ! Which doesn't seem appropriate here :-(

We don't need any more sticked threads imho. The discussion that arises from thread to thread can be interesting, and we all have the option of providing answers, providing links, or asking questions to further discussion. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
