| I purchased the download version (only version available). It is excellent! It is basically a trio performance of some dope neo-soul and gospel grooves, with interview-style explanation. They perform a groove in each section and stop to talk and review the different bass techniques employed (e.g., blues scale runs, trills, etc.) via the musical director (keyboard player) interviewing the bass player. The bass player walks through the groove to show and explain both the right-hand and left hand technique. They even have a virtual bass guitar neck showing the notes at the bottom of the screen.
The only shortcoming to this DVD/MP4 is that a lot of the more "juicy" runs that are slipped into the performance are not fully explained or slowed down to be analyzed by newbies like myself. In most cases they are indeed broken down note by note but again many of the juiciest of the juicy runs are only glanced over or, at times, not mentioned at all. They include the mp3 and midi files but no notation or tabs of the grooves. Also sometimes the camera is focused either on the keyboard player or the right-handed fingering, when instead the shot should be focused in on the fretting (this happens on the most juicy runs/grooves). NOTE: Unfortunately the MP4 format doesn't facilitate slowing down the video (at least not the video player that I have on my computer). This makes the virtual bass guitar neck somewhat useless.
They are very close to perfection. My only suggestion would be a FULL breakdown of the bass runs and riffs before simply jumping to the next topic.
It is a must buy...I don't believe that there is another instruction video that uses such a dynamic approach, especially considering the genre explored.
