Using a Computer as a practice tool

Sign in to disble this ad
can i use the computer as an all inclusive practice tool? is there a program or something that i can get or something that i can download? i would like a drum machine to play with, and i would also like to be able to record myself. maybe even a good digital tuner if i can get a good way to put my bass into the computer via the DI on my head unit? ive read about people using their computers as practice tools, but never seen the details. im very computer savvy, but just have never looked into using it for music. i know its doable, but whats out there, and how much would i have to spend?

Yup you can do it.

I run straight into my laptop i dont bother with the amp its not needed for just play on your own.

Ive used any downloadable drum machine some are free but very simple.

Basicly i run my bass into the sound in port on the sound card and thats about it no DI nothing fancy.

If you have something like Cakewalk Plasma, Pro tools etc you can write your own backing tracks and play to them also.

Something i would keep in mind is a TAScam bass trainer the same as the PC software and sometimes more!

What I want I don't see mentioned on the Band in a Box website. I want something to help me with syncopated rhythms. So I want to be able to type in a few bars of rhythms and have the software play it so I can get the feel for it. Can that be done with Band in a Box?

It Linux. Linux is for servers not desktops.

Although I haven't used it, Hydrogen has been ported to Windows. It's available on the download page.

And Linux is most certainly not just for servers. I used it exclusively as my desktop system for almost 2 years, burning cds, downloading music, playing video games, writing research papers.

Normally I don't get involved in these silly arguments, but could you please stop it with the misinformation and/or trolling? I guess maybe this was actually a joke?

Been involved using and SysAdmin for Linux and other servers since 1994. I stand by what I say. If you note I have not argued with anyone. I have expressed my opinion and lets others express theirs.

intrestingly enough I also came accross this site, which seems to have a collection of links... these are all online however

I dont know if you are looking for to pay for some software or what. I'm all about free and useable software. come to think of it there was another bass related site that have drum tracks and everything I can't think of it right now however.

http://www.activebass.com/ was the site I was thinking of.

If links weren't what you were looking for I'm sorry, these have been helpful to me in the past so I though I would pass them on.

It's not free (unless it came with your Mac, like mine did), but Garageband is AWESOME for practicing. It has a library of drummers doing all sorts of stuff that you can loop, and also guitars, keys, even tabla. Of course, it also has software instruments that you can program yourself. It takes about 30 seconds to make a cool 4 measure thingie, and I usually try different styles or tempos than I'm used to, let it loop, and jam away for an hour a day or so. I couldn't be happier.

Don't forget the latest version of GarageBand has a built in tuner as well. There are free tuning software packages out there if you look. I know of Perfect Pitch for Mac. I'm sure there must be something out for PC.

I'll 2nd the Tascam Bass Trainer recommendation as well. This has a built in tuner, metronome and can speed up / slow down music without changing pitch.

It also has the ability to accentuate/remove bass frequencies and works as a decent headphone amp. There's also a line in and line out along with instrument in and headphone out jacks so you can run a line out to a recorder and record your practice sessions for later listening.

You beat me to it. I just ordered Version 12 for myself. I need to practice my "real book" chops again - walking and soloing. I'm entering changes as I get time. I forgot how easy it is.
