Using 'Donna Lee' as a study - Lesson with Scott Devine
 

Hey guys,

One question I get all the time is 'how can I get great technique'?

Obviously there are many different ways of working on your technique but by using 'study pieces' it can make it a little more musical than simply shedding up and down scales (which can also great be the way) ;)

I was just watching that old Jaco instructional DVD on YouTube and he said it took him 9 years to get Donna Lee finished. Learning piece by piece indeed. Scott, I'm looking forward to parts II through CXCVIII.;)

Part of the fun of a piece like that is to learn to read standart notation and also to make you think :"where is the best place for me to play that sentence ?"

I play it differently than you ( fingering ) because it suites me better but I had to find it by myself.

Also I thought everyone learned that way ( small bit by small bit ).

In truth, Miles Davis wrote Donna Lee. It was miscredited to Bird on the album.

How did you engineer those recordings, Scott? I'm guessing the bass was DI... BTW, your muting technique is excellent!

Really and truly? Not saying it ain't so, but -- at the risk of thread derailment -- can you point me to some relevant sources to support this assertion?

Donna Lee was on my list back in high school, along with the "Chromatic Fantasy" (from Bach)... never learned it (though I did get some of the Fantasia down). Maybe now is the time. I'll give that vid a watch!

Thanks Scott - your stuff is always top notch. Do you have any other pieces you would recommend as study pieces. Maybe something not so adventurous for someone looking to start a jazz / classical type course of study.

Yeah... since putting that tutorial out I've had a few people mention it was actually Miles Davis who wrote the tune... not Charlie Parker... maybe this is why he put his name to the Bill Evans' tune 'Blue in Green'... pay back lol! ;)

Ewo... I just recorded it direct into my recording interface... no amp at all, and the bass is totally passive. Eq wise I just boosted the bass a bit.

As far as I remember - the whole thing was recorded on the bridge pickup with the tone rolled off a little.
